Bold audacious prayer begins when we stop allowing pain, fear and past labels to decide what God can do through our lives. Continuing the Faithful Under Pressure series at 3C South Coast, Pastor Larry challenged us to come before God with faith, clarity and a heart surrendered to His purpose.
Pressure can silence us, or it can drive us into God’s presence. As we learnt in Faithful Under Pressure: How to Stand Strong in Faith, standing strong doesn’t mean ignoring hardship. It means drawing our strength from the Lord and trusting His Word above what we see.
What Is Bold Audacious Prayer?
Bold audacious prayer is a clear, faith-filled cry to God that refuses to accept fear, pain or present circumstances as the final word. It grows in God’s presence, rests on His Word and asks not only for personal change, but for a life that serves His purpose and blesses others.
This isn’t arrogant prayer. It’s prayer that knows who God is.
Boldness Is Built in God’s Presence
Pastor Larry opened with Joshua’s extraordinary prayer during Israel’s battle against the Amorites:
Joshua 10:12–13 (NKJV) — “Sun, stand still over Gibeon; and Moon, in the Valley of Aijalon.” So the sun stood still, and the moon stopped.
Joshua asked God to do something that looked impossible. But that public moment of boldness was connected to years spent privately in God’s presence.
When Moses left the tabernacle to return to his responsibilities, Joshua stayed behind.
Exodus 33:11 (NKJV) — “But his servant Joshua the son of Nun, a young man, did not depart from the tabernacle.”
Joshua’s bold prayer didn’t appear from nowhere. Faith had been growing while he waited before God, listened to His voice and allowed the Word to shape his thinking.
We can’t neglect God’s presence and still expect to live with spiritual courage. The altar comes before the battle. Time on our knees prepares us to stand when pressure comes.
Give Back What God Places in Your Hands
Hannah gives us another picture of courageous prayer. She cried out to God for a son and promised that, if God answered her, she would dedicate that child to Him.
God gave her Samuel, and Hannah kept her word. Samuel later played a central part in restoring God’s voice to Israel.
Her story asks us a searching question: Are we still willing to honour God once He answers?
Many people want God to place something great in their hands. Hannah shows the maturity of giving that blessing back to God in worship and obedience. Bold prayer isn’t only about receiving. It’s about becoming someone God can trust with His purpose.
Your Pain Doesn’t Get to Name Your Future
The central passage of the message came from the short account of Jabez:
1 Chronicles 4:9–10 (AMP) — “But Jabez was more honorable than his brothers; but his mother named him Jabez, saying, ‘Because I gave birth to him in pain.’ Jabez cried out to the God of Israel, saying, ‘Oh, that You would indeed bless me and enlarge my border, and that Your hand would be with me, and You would keep me from evil so that it does not hurt me!’ And God granted his request.”
Jabez carried a name associated with sorrow and pain. Every time someone called his name, he heard a reminder of what others expected his life to become.
But Jabez refused to let that label control his future.
As Pastor Larry put it, his pain was real, but he didn’t let it make him bitter. He allowed it to give him a vision for something better.
People might have labelled you according to your mistakes, family history or past suffering. You might even have started using those labels about yourself. Jabez shows us that our history doesn’t hold more authority than God.
Pain can produce bitterness, or it can become the birthplace of intercession. The choice begins with what we do in God’s presence.
Guard Your Heart Under Pressure
When life keeps hitting the same tender place, discouragement can quietly settle in. That’s why bold prayer must be joined to a guarded heart.
Proverbs 4:23 (NKJV) — “Keep your heart with all diligence, for out of it spring the issues of life.”
Guarding your heart doesn’t mean pretending you aren’t hurting. It means refusing to feed your spirit with fear, negativity, doubt and unbelief.
Pastor Larry gave us a practical pattern from Proverbs 4:
- Put God’s Word into your heart.
- Renew your mind through daily time in Scripture.
- Speak what God says instead of repeating the enemy’s labels.
- Pay attention to the words leaving your mouth.
- Refuse to allow disappointment to become unbelief.
Jabez couldn’t control the name he had been given, but he could decide which voice would shape his future.
What Did Jabez Ask God to Do?
Jabez didn’t pray a vague or timid prayer. He came to God with four clear requests.
“Bless Me Indeed”
This wasn’t simply a request for comfort or possessions. Jabez wanted God’s favour on his life so that he could become a blessing to others.
God’s blessing was never meant to stop with us. He blesses families, businesses and ministries so that His goodness can flow through them into other lives.
“Enlarge My Border”
Jabez asked God to expand his territory and influence. For us, this can be a prayer for greater responsibility, greater capacity and more opportunities to serve.
The question isn’t only, “Lord, can You give me more?” It’s also, “Lord, can You trust me with more?”
“Let Your Hand Be With Me”
Jabez knew that greater territory without God’s presence would become a burden.
We need God’s hand upon our decisions, families, work and ministry. His presence gives us wisdom for what lies ahead and strength for responsibilities we couldn’t carry alone.
“Keep Me From Evil”
Jabez directly confronted the pain attached to his name. He asked God to protect him from evil and break the cycle of sorrow.
Jesus spoke of the enemy’s desire to steal, kill and destroy, but He also declared that He came to give us abundant life.
John 10:10 (NKJV) — “I have come that they may have life, and that they may have it more abundantly.”
Be Specific and Expect God to Move
Bold prayer isn’t measured by how long it lasts. The prayer of Jabez took only seconds, yet it came from a heart filled with faith.
Pastor Larry reminded us that repeating Jabez’s words as a formula misses the point. God wants us to speak honestly from our own hearts. What are you trusting Him to do? Where do you need His hand? What needs to change?
Jabez went directly into God’s presence, prayed specifically and expected something to move.
The natural evidence might not change immediately. People might still see you through the lens of your past. But faith begins working in the heart before its fruit becomes visible around you.
Mark 11:24 (NKJV) — “Whatever things you ask when you pray, believe that you receive them, and you will have them.”
Jesus also connected faith with forgiveness. We can’t hold tightly to offence while expecting faith to flow freely. A pure heart releases those who have hurt us and keeps looking to God.
Pray for Release, Not Only Relief
Pastor Larry drew an important distinction between prayers for relief and prayers for release.
- Relief says, “Lord, please get me out of this.”
- Release says, “Lord, bring me through this and use my life for Your purpose.”
Jabez didn’t only want an escape from pain. He wanted God to turn his story into a blessing. His prayer reached beyond his personal needs towards influence, legacy and the lives of others.
That’s the heart of being faithful under pressure. We don’t only ask God to remove difficult circumstances. We ask Him to form Christ in us and work through us while we face them.
The South Coast Is Blessed
Pastor Larry challenged the church to change the way we speak about our region. Margate isn’t cursed. Ramsgate isn’t forgotten. Shelly Beach and the South Coast aren’t beyond God’s reach.
The South Coast is blessed because men and women of faith are here, carrying the presence and message of Jesus.
As a church, we’re praying beyond ourselves. We’re trusting God to raise strong men and women across KwaZulu-Natal who will win souls, make disciples and carry His Word into their communities.
God isn’t finished with this region, and He isn’t finished with you.

- What label, disappointment or pattern have you allowed to define you?
- How did Joshua’s private time with God prepare him for public boldness?
- Are you praying mainly for relief, or are you asking God to release you into His purpose?
- Which part of Jabez’s prayer speaks most strongly to your present season?
- What bold, specific prayer can your cell agree on this week?
Allow time for each person to write down one prayer and pray it aloud with the group.
Questions About Praying With Boldness
Is bold prayer the same as demanding something from God?
No. Bold prayer approaches God with confidence while remaining surrendered to His will and purpose. It trusts His character without treating Him like a means of getting what we want.
Can I pray boldly when my faith feels weak?
Yes. Romans 8 teaches that the Holy Spirit helps us in our weakness. Bring God your honest heart, return to His Word and let faith grow in His presence.
What if nothing changes immediately?
Keep standing on God’s Word. Jabez’s outward circumstances didn’t necessarily change the moment he finished praying, but something had already shifted in his heart. Faith continues trusting before the answer becomes visible.
A Prayer for Bold Faith
Father, I refuse to let pain, fear or past labels decide my future.
Guard my heart and fill my mouth with Your Word. Bless me so that I can bless others, expand my capacity to serve You, place Your hand upon my life and keep me from evil. Give me courage to pray, faith to stand and a surrendered heart that You can use.
