Mother’s Day at 3C South Coast was not simply a moment to celebrate mothers. It was a call to see them through the eyes of Jesus — with honour, tenderness, and spiritual understanding. Ps Mandy’s message, “Behold Thy Mother, Behold Thy Son,” brought us to the foot of the cross, where Jesus showed us that love is not passive. Love takes responsibility.
“Now there stood by the cross of Jesus His mother, and His mother’s sister, Mary the wife of Clopas, and Mary Magdalene. When Jesus therefore saw His mother, and the disciple whom He loved standing by, He said to His mother, ‘Woman, behold your son!’ Then He said to the disciple, ‘Behold your mother!’ And from that hour that disciple took her to his own home.”
John 19:25–27

There is something deeply moving about Mary standing at the cross. She had carried Jesus in her womb, raised Him in her home, watched Him grow, and now stood close enough to witness His suffering. Mary did not run from the pain. She stayed.
That kind of strength is not loud and does not need attention. It stands, prays, and loves. It remains faithful when everything inside wants to break.
And from the cross, Jesus saw her.
In His agony, He still noticed His mother, saw her grief. Jesus saw her future. He saw the disciple John standing nearby too — the one who had failed, left, and returned. Then Jesus spoke words that carried far more than practical care: “Woman, behold your son… behold your mother.”
This was the heart of the message. At the cross, Jesus was doing more than arranging a home for Mary. He was revealing the family of God.
Motherhood Carries a Holy Weight
Motherhood was never a small thing in God’s design. Ps Mandy reminded us that a mother carries more than a child. She carries an atmosphere. From the earliest stages of life, a mother’s love, faith, prayers, pain, and perseverance help shape what is being formed.
A mother often sees what others miss. She gathers broken pieces – fights in prayer – carries hope when the family feels weary. She may not always have the words, but oh boy, she knows how to stand in the gap!
That is why Mother’s Day is more than flowers, cards, and kind messages. Those things are beautiful, but the day carries a deeper invitation: to honour the office of motherhood itself.

Some women mother through birth. Others mother through faith, leadership, mentoring, prayer, and spiritual covering. Some never receive the title publicly, but heaven knows the sons and daughters they have carried.
“But as many as received Him, to them He gave the power to become sons of God…”
John 1:12–13
In Christ, family becomes bigger than bloodline. God gives people a place, a name, and a covering. He places us in a spiritual family so that no one has to walk alone.
Behold Thy Mother: Seeing With the Eyes of Jesus
The phrase behold thy mother is not just poetic language. It is a Kingdom instruction.
To behold means to truly see. Not glance, assume, or take for granted. To behold is to recognise the person in front of you and understand that God may be asking you to love them with action, not just emotion.

Jesus looked at Mary and John and drew them into responsibility. Mary would receive John as a son. John would care for Mary as a mother. Neither relationship was based on convenience. It was born near the cross.
That is where real spiritual family is formed.
John’s part in this moment is also powerful. He had returned after failure. John carried the weight of what had happened, yet Jesus did not shame him. Jesus entrusted him.
What grace.
The cross does not only forgive us. It restores us into purpose. Then it gives us people to love, cover, disciple, and carry.
This connects beautifully with Ps Mandy’s earlier message, What Are You Drinking From? Living Water That Truly Satisfies, where we were reminded that Jesus is the only source that truly satisfies. When we drink from Him, we begin to carry His heart for others.
Love Becomes Responsibility Near the Cross
It is easy to talk about love. It is harder to carry it.
Near the cross, love becomes practical. It looks like care. Forgiveness. Repentance. Letting go. Showing up again. Taking responsibility for the person God has placed in front of you.
That is the question Ps Mandy left with us: who has God asked you to behold?
It may be
- Your mother.
- Child.
- Someone in your family who needs forgiveness.
- Young believer who needs guidance.
- a leader, friend, neighbour, or someone quietly carrying pain.
God places people in our lives on purpose. The closer we come to Jesus, the more clearly we see them.

This is why church life is so important. We are not called to live out our faith as isolated believers. We are planted into a spiritual family where we can be known, loved, corrected, strengthened, and sent.
“Even unto them will I give in My house and within My walls a place and a name better than sons and daughters… an everlasting name.”
Isaiah 56:5
God is still building family. He is still restoring identity. He is still giving people a place to belong.
Honour Her
Motherhood is often quiet work. Much of it is unseen. The prayers, tears, late nights, emotional weight, the sacrifices, moments of choosing faith when fear feels easier — Heaven sees all of it.

That is why Scripture says:
“So go ahead and give her the credit that is due, for she has become a radiant woman, and all her loving works of righteousness deserve to be admired at the gateways of every city!”
Proverbs 31:31
On Mother’s Day, we honour mothers by birth, mothers by faith, and mothers by calling. We honour the women who raised us, covered us, corrected us, prayed for us, and loved us into strength. We honour those who stood even when it cost them.
And we also recognise that the call does not end with mothers alone. Every believer is invited into this same heart: to see people as Jesus sees them and to respond with love that moves.
Ladies, the upcoming Fruitful Women’s Conference from 4–5 September is a beautiful opportunity to be refreshed, strengthened, and stirred again for all God has placed within you.
Behold Thy Mother, Behold Thy Son For Cell Leaders
This week, give your group space to speak honestly about honour, family, and spiritual responsibility.
Ask these questions:
- Who has God placed in your life to behold?
- Where is love asking you to take responsibility?
- How can we honour mothers and spiritual mothers in a practical way this week?
- Is there someone you need to forgive, receive, or care for differently?
Pray for mothers, families, spiritual sons and daughters, and those who find Mother’s Day painful or complicated. Remind the group that Jesus sees every person at the cross, and He brings healing, belonging, and purpose.

Prayer for Mothers
Lord Jesus, thank You for seeing us from the cross.
Teach us to behold the people You have placed in our lives. Strengthen every mother, every spiritual mother, and every woman carrying others in faith. Heal family wounds, restore honour, and make us a people who love with action.
In Jesus Name – Amen.
